Best Law School for Hispanics
The September issue of Hispanic Business features American University’s Washington College of Law as the #5 top Law school in the 2007 Best Schools for Hispanics report, which features lists in the fields of law, business, engineering and medicine. (08/30/07)

Save the Electoral College
The Electoral College of today undermines American democracy, with its betrayal of majority rule and invitation of partisan operatives, Jamie Raskin, a law professor at American University, wrote in an opinion piece for Slate, an online magazine. “We don't need a new partisan trick to 'fix' our presidential process,” he writes. “We need only enact the existing obvious solution.”(08/24/07)

Parents of Freshmen: Letting Go
More and more parents are finding it harder to release their children as they embark on college life, The Washington Post reports. “I've heard four or five times this summer: 'I'm not a helicopter parent!” said Tiffany Sanchez, director of new student programs at American University. Last year, to help parents adapt, an orientation brochure was created for parents, albeit with choice words: Rather then explaining how to sign up for classes, it says “your child will register” on a given date -- hinting that students, not parents, are responsible. Senator Craig’s Gay Remarks Unsettling
Senator Larry Craig's 'I'm not gay' declaration was met with disdain from gay activists, viewing his case as a prime example of hypocrisy. However, William Leap, an anthropology professor at American University, said his research indicated that up to half of those who engage in male bathroom sex would consider themselves heterosexual. “You've got several groups of folks,” he said. “Happily married men with children who enjoy having sex with men every so often, and also self-identified gay men who enjoy the thrill of anonymous sex.” Professor Leap’s remarks were included in an Associated Press article that appeared in more than 65 newspapers. He also appeared on MSNBC to discuss the issues, and was interviewed by NPR. (08/29/07)

More Support for Iraq War?
President Bush made another pitch for the war in Iraq with hopes to rally support before next month’s progress report to Congress. In an interview with Hearst-Argyle Television, Gordon Adams, a professor of international relations at American University, said he doesn't believe the progress report will lead to any major changes. “I don't expect the president to suddenly see the wisdom of an alternative and pull out forces rapidly and announce that in the middle of September,” he said. This interview appeared on 28 of Hearst-Argyle’s affiliates, including WBAL-TV in Baltimore. (08/28/07)

Gonzales’ Loyalty was his Downfall
After months of speculation, Alberto Gonzales resigned from his position as attorney general this week. “He was not the intellectual father of those positions, but he shaped and articulated them at the White House, and he continued to take a very strong position on executive power as attorney general,” said Daniel Marcus, a professor of constitutional law at American University who was a top official at the Justice Department under President Bill Clinton, to The New York Times.
