Week of September 8 - 14
USA TODAY Turns 25
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, USA TODAY, the nation's largest circulation newspaper, partnered with AU’s School of Communication on a series of events with a range of topics including the First Amendment, reinventing the news business and how USA TODAY changed the media industry. The Washington Post (09/15/07) and mediabistro.com (09/13/07) mentioned the special celebration while CSPAN taped two events, "Reinventing the News Business: 1982 and Today" and "How an Upstart Influenced the Industry" for future broadcast.
FDA Approval Changes
The Food & Drug Administration Revitalization Act, which was created to update the agency’s drug safety activities with its focus on drug efficacy, has changes that will drastically affect how companies seek FDA approval. Two former FDA commissioners pointed out two of the major changes during a September 12 briefing on drug safety in Washington, DC, hosted by AU's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies. The RPM Report provided a synopsis of the discussion. (09/13/07)
Gay or Straight?
While most of Americans would disagree that a man can seek sex with another amn and not be a homosexual, almost half of all men who have sex with other men in public bathrooms consider themselves to be straight, William Leap, a professor of anthropology at American University, told The Miami Herald. “They insist, 'I'm not gay, I'm not homosexual, I'm straight,'” Leap said. “The general description for these guys is they are married and they often talk about these encounters as recreational -- fun, excitement, a break from the long workday.”(09/09/07)
The Iraq Report
According to a report by the Defense Intelligence Agency, insurgent attacks against Iraqi civilians, their security forces and U.S. troops remain at a high percentage. However, in an interview with the Associated Press, Gordon Adams, a former Clinton administration official who specializes in defense issues, said it is important to question all the statistics coming from Iraq. “When you really care about something, you're really tempted to use the numbers that look best to you,” said Adams, who is a professor at American University's School of International Service, to The Juneau Empire.
