Taking Care of Business
The many students falling into the trap of taking on more responsibility than they’re prepared for when it comes to credit cards prompted senior Vanessa Mueller, director of the Women’s Initiative, to develop “Dollars and Sense,” a year-long series, which gives students the tools to build a solid financial future, Fox5 WTTG-TV reports. “We want to scare them, show them that finances are an important responsibility and that they couldn't put off until after graduation, or their early 30s, they have to think about it now,” Mueller said. Fox 5 was live on campus throughout their morning show to introduce the segment about Mueller and two other segments focusing on taking care of your financial health. (10/15/07)
New Katzen exhibit
The works of Roger Brown, an Alabama-born artist who blended comics and surrealism into his own style during the Chicago imagist movement, will be on display at the Katzen Arts Center in February, reports the Associated Press. Many of the forty works in the exhibit, which span his career, are from the Roger Brown Study Collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. This article appeared in more than 50 news outlets. Dalai Lama comes to D.C.
Though President Bush and the Dalai Lama will met with a ceremony to award the spiritual leader the Congressional Gold Medal, China has warned that the meeting will tarnish ties between the country and the U.S., the Associated Press reports. However, Judith Shapiro, a China author and professor at American University, says the would not profoundly affect ties, stating that “China needs the U.S., the U.S. needs China, and issues like Tibet are a bit of a sideshow to the basic relationship.” This article appeared in more than 180 news outlets. What defines genocide?
When President Bush spoke against a congressional resolution on labeling the killings of hundreds of thousands of Armenians as genocide, the question of what level does carnage have to reach before it is considered genocide came to the forefront, reports the Washington Post. “One of the mistakes we have made in recent memory is we have performed legal gymnastics to avoid using the word 'genocide' when describing real-time atrocities,” said Diane Orentlicher, an expert on genocide at American University's Washington College of Law. “That misses the point of the [international] Genocide Convention -- which is, if you wait until it's legally certain that a genocide has occurred, you have waited too long to prevent it.” (10/14/07)
IMF, World Bank credibility
With the International Monetary Fund (IMF) fighting to justify its importance in the midst of criticism that the bank is inefficient and too western-dominated, the new heads at the World Bank and the IMF face the task of revitalizing its credibility, the Agence France Presse reports. “Both (Robert) Zoellick and Dominique Strauss-Kahn are certainly competent people. But I don't think it is so easy for them to make change on their own,” said Daniel Bradlow, an international law professor at American University in Washington, where the institutions are based. This article appeared in more than 12 news outlets. (10/13/07)
SOC Professor on Journalist's death
Since March 2003, more than 100 journalists have been killed in Iraq during the war, making it the deadliest conflict for journalists, said Joe Campbell, an associate professor with American University's School of Communication, to WRC-NBC4. Campbell's comments were in reference to the death of Salih Aldin, a Washingon Post journalist killed in Baghdad.
