Tips for the Job Seeker
Checking Web sites for background information, reconstructing the resume and cleaning up online profiles are just three tips on being successful at a career fair, the Washington Post reports. “Find ways to make yourself stand out," said Jay Liwanag, director of career services at American University's Kogod School of Business, which hosted an American Marketing Association job fair this week. “Don’t be shy about asking smart questions about the workplace culture or job details -- thoughtful queries may impress and they show interest.” The job fair was the focus of a WRC NBC4 television segment and Liwanag was also interviewed on WAMU 88.5 where he suggested that connections and networking were key to new grads who are job-hunting. More Languages, More Money
Communication is key in today's global economy, and the ability to speak more than one language has become increasingly significant as more companies expand to international territories, reports ClassesUSA.com. 'There are many organizations where being able to communicate in a second language is very important,” said Jesse Boeding, director of undergraduate programs at American University’s Kogod School of Business, which recently implemented its first interdisciplinary degree in business administration and language and culture studies to respond to the higher demand from employers looking for bilingual students. This article appeared in 20 news outlets. (3/25/08)
Darfur Action Now
The genocide in Darfur has become one of the greatest humanitarian crisises in the world. Eight American University students in the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program opened up a much needed dialogue on the subject during their Darfur Action Now Awareness Event on the AU campus. C-SPAN covered the evening's political panel live, which was moderated by SIS professor Carl LeVan and featured the Ambassador of Chad and many renowned human rights advocates. (3/27/08)
The Interfaith Experience
To encourage interfaith interaction, many campuses have constructed multi-faith facilities as places of worship, Inside HigherEd reports. “It seems to me that in our setting, our environment, people come into the Kay Spiritual Life Center knowing its going to be a profoundly interfaith experience,” said the Rev. Joseph Eldridge, a United Methodist minister and the university chaplain at American University “It’s implicit. It’s embedded in the DNA of the place.” (3/26/08)
Big Win for Fair Use
A federal judge ruled that a commercial plagiarism-detection tool used by college professors does not violate the copyright of students, reports the Chronicle of Higher Education. “I would expect that, on appeal, the lawyers for the plaintiffs might explore a wrinkle that the judge doesn't really address in the opinion," said Peter A. Jaszi, a law professor at American University. “If this opinion, as it stands, were to be endorsed on appeal, it can only help the cause of Google Library.” (3/26/08)
Can Clinton Capture a Big-State Win?
With Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton still in a close race for delegates during the presidential primaries, many are questioning whether big-state victories are the key to securing the Democratic nomination. Others question whether or not Obama can capture the nomination and ulitimately win the general election, reports the Wall Street Journal. "The argument holds no water at all, not even a thimbleful," said Allan Lichtman, a political historian at American University, who added that many candidates, including Jimmy Carter and John Kerry, both carried big swing state wins and ultimately lost the presidential election to Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush respectively. (3/24/08)
The First 100 Days of Office
Should Sen. Hillary Clinton win the presidential election, her first 100 days will be spent making potentially-successful proposals instead of tackling major issues, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “She needs to show the nation she can lead, and lead successfully. It's important to take that honeymoon 100 days and do that,” said Karen O'Connor, director of American University's Women and Politics Institute “Why exhaust that honeymoon period on something that is extraordinarily difficult to get through intact?” (3/27/08)
The Aftermath of a Presidential Election loss
"How will McCain, Clinton or Obama react should they lose their bid for the White House?," Reuters asked several experts. "The three face very different situations, but in each case they have to show some grace if they lose -- or they will be in trouble," said James Thurber of American University's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies. This article appeared in more than 90 news outlets. (3/25/08)
