Swaying the Older Generation
While Sen. Barack Obama is a favorite among young voters, he has failed to gain the support of senior citizens, who mostly side with Sen. Hillary Clinton, Politico reports. The reasoning, according to American University professor Leonard Steinhorn, who has researched the Baby Boom generation, could be that the older generation most likely identifies with someone who has “paid their dues in life,” while the young crowd is more fascinated with someone “who hasnt been ground down by life and paid their dues.” (4/27/08)
College Acceptance 2.0
While many high-school seniors anticipate large envelopes containing letters of acceptance from the colleges of their choice, more colleges and universities are enhancing the experience via e-mail correspondence, the Press of Atlantic City reports. “We're trying to communicate the way our students communicate,” said Cristan Trahey, acting director of admissions for American University. “We call it the good-news-is-on-the-way e-mail.” (4/29/08)
Going Green meets Religion
The increased call for "Going Green" has now made its way into many religious denominations, becoming a centerpiece in the effort to better the environment, reports the Star Tribune. “If the mandate given to Adam and Eve was once a matter of noblesse oblige, it is now a matter of survival,” said Rabbi Kenneth Cohen, a chaplain at American University in Washington, D.C. “We are poisoning ourselves with pollution and squandering scarce resources, violating the Deuteronomic injunction to 'choose life.'” (4/26/08)
Made in the USA?
How closely do you look at the label when you shop? Even when you think you're buying products made in the United States, you may be buying something made in another country. WTTG Fox5's Melanie Alwnick shopped for the truth behind patriotic packaging. "It's very hard to find items that are soley made in America," said Michael Mazis, a professor of marketing in the Kogod School of Business. "Made in the U.S.A." is the most important trait about a product to some buyers, said Mazis, but to others, quality is of greater importance. (4/30/2008)
Who will be better in November?
With the race for the Democratic presidential nomination at a constant neck-and-neck pace, the deciding factor may come down to who would be the stronger candidate in November to go up against Sen. John McCain, reports the Baltimore Sun. According to Curtis Gans, director of American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate, young voters will not go to the polls to support Sen. Hillary Clinton, and many voters will go against Obama because of race. “But most of the Democrats will come into the fold, because of things like the war and the economy,” he said. (4/27/08)
The Baby Boomer Economic Crush
Contrary to popular belief, the biggest financial crisis facing the U.S. is not the housing crunch, but rather the looming government debt that will be placed on the backs of the younger generation as the nation’s baby boomers move into retirement, columnist Jay Hancock wrote in his piece for the Baltimore Sun. “It's younger people who are going to inherit the debt," says American University professor Andrew L. Yarrow. “It's an issue for twenty-somethings. It's an issue for thirty-somethings. And it's an issue for children as well.” (4/30/08)
Boardroom Boot Camp
Given their strong leadership, adaptability skills, routine risk-taking and ability to work in small teams, U.S. Navy SEALs may fit in well when it comes to owning a business, reports the Virginian Pilot. “That's typical of how entrepreneurs operate,” said Barbara Bird, an associate professor of management at American University's Kogod School of Business. “There's an illusion that entrepreneurs are lone rangers, when in fact most don't start businesses alone. They team up with a handful of other people and do it collaboratively.” (4/27/08)
