Week of July 12 - 18

High-tech hires
Angela Wu, chair of the department of computer science program at American University, was quoted in a Washington Business Journal story about the high demand for technology experts. Enrollment in the university’s computer science program has more than doubled, she said. (7/11/08)

Help for interns
Washington Semester's WINS (Washington Internship for Native Students) program was mentioned in a Chronicle of Higher Education story about students working unpaid internships and the measures taken by programs and colleges to provide them with aid. A nontraditional artist
The Noche Crist exhibit, currently showing at the Katzen Arts Center at American University, was featured in the Washington Post, highlighting the paintings’ intricate color scheme and the artists' status as a untraditional and an outsider from the art world. (7/18/08)

Inner-minority conflict
In her opinion piece for the Oregonian, Angie Chuang, an assistant professor of journalism in the School of Communication at American University, noted that Sen. Barack Obama is popular among minorities, yet still faces racial issues within that community. “Anyone who has watched 'Crash' recalls the post-Rodney King images of Korean store owners taking up arms against African-American rioters, or reads the news about black-Latino gang wars, knows that America's race problem is not just black and white,” she said. (7/16/08)

Too old for president?
Leonard Steinhorn, professor of communication at American University, was quoted in an Associated Press story on Sen. John McCain and the question of whether his age will hinder his effectiveness as President. “McCain is getting on the upper end of the comfort zone for Americans, who wonder whether he's going to have the vigor and the health as president,” he said. This story was picked up by more than 100 news outlets. (7/14/08)

Politics of Picking a Vice President
Professor Steinhorn was also quoted in a News Blaze story about the process of selectign a vice president. The presidential nominee makes both a political and personal decision when he selects a VP, he said, which “gives us a bit of a window into [the presidential candidates’] thinking and types of judgments they have about people.” (7/12/08)

Party loyalty and the 5-nation tour
James Thurber, director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, was quoted in a USA Today story about party loyalty and the pitfalls that Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain can encounter with their unconventional methods in their respective campaigns. Thurber said that while both are “legitimate leaders,” he is skeptical about the promises they’ve made, and would like to hear more of an explanation. Thurber was also quoted in a USA Today article about Barack Obama's upcoming five-country tour through Europe and the Middle East. Thurber said that through the 12,000-mile trip Obama "is going to be a rock star."(7/16/08)

Justice for Darfur?
Paul Williams, a law professor and legal expert at American University, was quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story about the indictment of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and its effect on the peace process in Darfur. “The indictment of Bashir and Sudan is actually a positive step in the peace process, because it will clarify the nature of the conflict,” he said.
