Measuring improvement and success
Karen Froslid Jones, director of institutional research at American University, was quoted in an Inside HigherEd story about accreditation and the measure of success at colleges and universities. “We’re really aware of external pressures on us,” she said. “We know that if we don’t do a good job with the assessment, it will come back to us one way or the other.” (7/22/08)
The road to China
Brad Vering, a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at American University, was featured in a Washington Post story about his career and the inspiration that led to his qualifying victory for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. “Wrestling is really hard, and it's a tough sport physically and mentally, but you appreciate the finer things in life,” he said. “You feel like you earned them, because you worked hard.” Vering also helped coach AU alum and 2007 NCAA wrestling champion Josh Glenn. Obama's world tour
Leonard Steinhorn, professor of communication at American University, appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to discuss Sen. Barack Obama’s overseas trip to Europe and the Middle East in the midst of his presidential campaign. “He's listening, taking in the facts, coming off with stature, statesmanship and a degree of leadership,” he said. Obama speaks to world leaders
AU communications professor Dotty Lynch was quoted in a USA Today story regarding Sen. Obama’s meetings with international leaders during his trip. “Being able to deal on an international stage is really a threshold issue for presidential candidates,” she said. (7/21/08)
Crashing the party
Michael Monrroy, a freshman in American University's School of Public Affairs, was featured in the Washington Examiner’s "Kudos" page for his political video, which won SiTV’s “Crash the Parties” competition. As the winner, Monrroy will get a chance to cover the Republican National Convention in September for SiTV, a Spanish-language cable network. (7/25/08)
Cuba reforms
William LeoGrande, dean of the School of Public Affairs at American University, was quoted in a Latin Business Chronicle story about new Cuban president Raul Castro’s increasing reforms for the country. “From the market experiments in agriculture to the recision of burdensome regulations and the criticism of vulgar egalitarianism, Raul's approach signals a willingness to free individual initiative and entrepreneurship in pursuit of economic growth,” he said. Saved from foreclosure?
Robert Losey, American University professor of finance, appeared on WTTG to discuss the current housing crisis and efforts by the Fairfax county department of housing to save some homeowners from foreclosure. “It is going to make it easier for the person who is on the margin, who is in the house that might be foreclosed on, to stay in the house.” (7/24/08)
Alternative space rockets
Howard McCurdy, a space policy expert at American University, was quoted in a New Scientist Magazine story about NASA engineers’ plans to create an alternative to its Ares rockets, used to transport astronauts into space, and whether or not the machinery would be effective. McCurdy said that the project could create a larger problem for NASA, regardless of funding and effectiveness. (7/21/08)
Biking towards better agriculture
AU alums Liz Tylander and Kat Shiffler were featured in a Washington Post story about their 2000-mile bicycle journey up the East Coast in search of better and more environmentally-friendly agriculture. Tylander and Shiffler, who discovered their love of environmental filmmaking during their time at AU, documented the trip on film and the Internet. They have now turned their voyage into a documentary film titled 'Garden Cycles Bike Tour.' (7/24/08)
