Barack Obama and John McCain’s changing views during their presidential campaigns, and the appropriate time to switch positions on an issue. “They have to tread a fine line between the two,” he said. Alan Kraut, professor of immigration history at American University, was quoted in a Washington Examiner story about the immigration policy in Virginia’s Prince William County, and the effect on its reputation. “Right now, Prince William County has become synonymous with American nativism, and I'm not sure that's the kind of reputation all the people in the county want to have," he said. The power of language in film
Celine-Marie Pascale, an American University sociologist who analyzes language and representation, was quoted in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story about the usage of slurs in the film Tropic Thunder, and its impact on viewers. “'Retard' is a slur that opens up wounds," she said. Racisim and the presidency
Curtis Gans, a professor at American University, appeared in a Voice of America television segment on Americans’ view of the idea of a sitting minority President. “What we know is that he [Obama] can't win in Alabama and Mississippi and Louisiana, and probably South Carolina and Georgia,” Gans said. “But in the areas where it is marginal you could say western Pennsylvania, it is also southwestern Ohio, and a few other places, you are dealing with this problem of the white working-class vote.” (8/11/08)
