Showcasing AU programs, professors, students and alumni in the news
Week of August 30 - September 5

The legacy of Dick Cheney
In his opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times, Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University, wrote about Dick Cheney’s mark on holding the vice presidency. “In the post-Cheney era, the next vice president should expect to make a major substantive contribution to the new administration,” he wrote. “But he or she should consider taking a more humble and less autocratic approach to the office than Cheney.” (9/3/08)

Media Hype over VP pick
Leonard Steinhorn, a professor of communication at American University, was quoted in a Hollywood Reporter story about the media coverage surrounding Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as Sen. John McCain’s pick for the vice presidency."People take very seriously who has their finger on the button, who is going to be in charge of our country in a time of uncertainty, who is going to be setting policy not only today but for the future," he said. "You're going to see this thorough, absolutely massive coverage simply because of who she is." (9/3/08)

Can Palin replace Clinton?
Karen O’Connor, the director of the Women and Politics Institute at American University, was quoted in a New York Times story about Hillary Clinton supporters and their stance on women in politics with the upcoming elections. “If 18 million votes is not enough, what does it take in the Democratic Party to get a woman on the ticket?” she said of the repeated phrase of Clinton’s “18 million cracks in the glass ceiling” (8/30/08)

Reporting from Minnesota
Dotty Lynch, CBS News political consultant and professor at American University, was featured in a WBJC-AM radio interview about her time at the Republican National Convention. “The Republicans are almost always better organized,” she said. “They’re more in lock step, they’re more organized, the facilities are a little bit easier, and I think I’m finding that a difference here as well.” (9/1/08)

Rice’s diplomacy
Clarence Lusane, professor of international relations at American University , was quoted in a Forbes magazine story about Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and her history of diplomacy despite some opposition in the White House. "The most antagonism occurred in 2002 and 2003, when the intelligence on Iraq, which really came through her desk [when she was National Security Advisor], was snatched by Cheney and Rumsfeld," he said. "Her cachet was that she could always get to Bush.”

The economy determines the winner
In his opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal, Bradley Schiller, professor of economics at American University , wrote that the likelihood of Sen. John McCain winning the presidential election will be based on the state of the economy at the time of the elections. “When voters enter the voting booth, they choose the candidate who they believe will best secure their economic future,” he said. “If the economy is doing well, they generally vote to keep the incumbent party in power. If the economy is declining, jobs are disappearing, and prices are rising, they'll vote for a change—specifically, new stewardship of the economy.” (9/5/08)

From K-Mart to the McCain campaign
American University alum Sarah Simmons was featured in a Pitch: Kansas City News story about her progression from working at a Kansas City K-Mart to becoming Sen. John McCain’s directory of strategy. “We're going to see great strength for McCain in Missouri as voters get their full load of information,” she said. “And they will, because we'll be doing our jobs.” (9/4/08)
